Tessa Callan Tessa is extremely excited to be returning to Outtatown for a second year! The Outtatown life captures her passions for travel, learning, connecting deeply with people and exploring hard questions.

Although Winnipeg is Tessa’s home, she has managed to be there for only one winter in the last four years! After graduating from CMU with a degree in Conflict Resolution, Tessa spent a year in Jamaica working with Mennonite Central Committee as an instructor in Conflict Resolution and the Biblical basis for peacemaking. Tessa’s time in Jamaica challenged and strengthened her and helped her gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between suffering and faith. She has also worked with Afghani refugees in the U.S. and has been a lifeguard and youth worker with inner city youth. Prior to working with Outtatown, Tessa was a grade five teacher.

Tessa’s educational, work and life experience have raised an awareness of God’s call on her life to work as a peacemaker. She loves to do this through mentoring young adults and building community. Tessa can’t wait to start another adventure filled with the beauty of oceans and mountains and figuring out what it means to be God’s people in a world of both hope and brokenness.

Aaron NussbaumAlthough this is the first summer in 5 years that Aaron will not have worked at a camp, he still has a lot to be excited about.  Becoming an uncle for the first time and a large family reunion in July, multiple weddings all across the country in August, and the anticipation of starting the Outtatown program is enough to keep Aaron entertained for the summer.

An Oregon native, Aaron has spent the last couple of years in Harrisonburg, Virginia where he graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a Degree in Camping, Recreation and Outdoor Ministries.  This past year he spent working with Big Brothers Big Sisters, a national program that works to match volunteers from the local community with children in need of a mentor.

Aaron enjoys being active and it is in nature that he feels closest to God.   He likes to play games ranging from Rook to Risk to Settlers of Cantan.  A big sports fan, Aaron has enjoyed watching the NHL as of late and can’t wait to watch hockey with his Canadian brethren next fall.

Laura CarmichaelLaura is thrilled about the opportunity to be a site leader in the South Africa program. She grew up in Ontario but left to study Social Sciences at Trinity Western University in B.C.  Passionate about people, Laura loves hearing stories and learning what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in both our immediate communities and the world as a whole.

She has worked at camp for eight summers in a variety of roles but her favourite remains being cabin leader. During her time at TWU she was actively involved in student life as a Resident Assistant, Discipleship Leader and in a ministry to the youth and the working women of Vancouver’s downtown eastside.

After many years of dreaming of going to Africa, she spent last summer in Tanzania having her heart captured by the people she was privileged to love and serve.  This past year, Laura has been working with adults who have developmental disabilities and will spend the summer visiting friends and camping.

She looks forward to how God will open her eyes to see and know Him more this year through the people and adventures that are to come. Laura loves anything that involves quality time with people, especially if it includes tea or being outdoors.

Andrew JanzenAndy’s experience starts with being pure menno. Because of his background he enjoys drinking Mate and reminiscing in Plautdietsch (Low German). He has extensive short-term missions experiences in several countries: Mexico, Paraguay, Thailand, Costa Rica, Italy and some North American locations as well. Somewhat surprisingly, he actually spent 4 whole years at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Work from 1999-2003. He has been a volunteer youth worker at his home church of Central Heights in Abbotsford from 1997-2007 with a one year break in between when he volunteered in an orphanage in Paraguay, S.A. (1998-1999) and 4 month leave to work with youth in a church plant in Forli, Italy (2005). Most recently he was worship pastor in a church plant in Cloverdale, BC.

Andy is a jovial and free spirited person. He’s a worshipper and pursuer of God the Father, by his Son Jesus and through his Holy Spirit. He enjoys the outdoors in most any capacity and loves people. He’s big into music and the arts, and most sports (even extreme ones like cow tipping and hot coal juggling). Andy is all about experiencing the richness of life in Christ and encouraging others in that too. Some of his friends have sometimes wondered whether Andy is an adult who lapses into childhood or a child who sometimes lapses into adulthood. That is to say he knows when and how to have fun and when to smarten up. Andy is very excited to be a part of Outtatown this year and believes it’s a perfect fit for him.
